9/2/10 Annual Golf Tournament Proceeds Presented to Boys & Girls Club of Fernley
by Kathy Kennedy (Photo by Valerie Brown) The Rotary Club of Fernley's Fourth Annual Golf Benefit Classic, held June 26th at the Golf Club of Fernley, raised approximately $12,000 this year for the benefit of local non-profits, educational, and youth service programs that serve the Fernley community. This was the best attended tournament to date, with more than a hundred golfers participating.
Fifty percent of the tournament proceeds (subject to a maximum donation of $5,000.00) were pledged to the Boys & Girls Club of Fernley. The Rotary Club of has been a strong supporter of the Boys & Girls Club of Fernley since ComPass first began working with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Truckee Meadows to establish the Fernley club. This is the fourth year tournament proceeds have been earmarked for the program. The first three years' annual donations of $5,000.00 helped provide the seed money that enabled the Boys & Girls Club to receive its charter earlier this year. All tolled, the Rotary Club of Fernley has donated $20,000.00 the help fund this vital community program.

CLUB ACTIVITIES
On February 19th, our club hosted its 3rd annual Speech Contest. Pictured are first place winner, Ken Bridwell, Fernley High Speech Teacher Lynne Gervais, and second place winner, Samantha Kuzemchak. The 2008-2009 Rotary International theme "Make Dreams Real" was the subject of each contestant's speech. In addition to their award certificates, Ken Bridwell received the first place prize of $75.00 and Samantha Kuzemchak received the second place prize of $50.00. Club members were impressed and inspired by the contestants' speeches.
Club Members stayed up all night to support WALK FOR LIFE, the national campaign that supports research and mammography testing in the fight against breast cancer. Many do not realize that men, too, are counted among this disease's victims. Our club members walked not only for our sisters in this fight, but our brothers as well. Early detection and treatment is vital to the survival of those afflicted with breast cancer. Our club's president-elect, Cindy Lara, has devoted hundreds of hours over the last five months recruiting participants and sponsors for this important event. The club salutes her dedication, as well as those fellow club members who participated and raised more than $1,800.00. ≈ The "Pennies For Polio" program is underway in Fernley. Inspired by the fundraising project undertaken by a Fallon high school student, Charter Member Aolani Glover and former member Claudia Respass piloted our club's sister project. Charter Member Jessie Wagoner is now in charge of distributing and collecting donation jars from local businesses. Many of those businesses employ or are owned by Rotary Club of Fernley members. Customers can donate their change to make a difference. Half of the funds raised went to benefit the Junior Rodeo. The remainder went to support other Rotary assisted community programs such as the summer theatre program sponsored by COMPASS. Other activities included a book sale at the Diamond F Ranch during the City's fall celebration, the proceeds of which benefited art programs in the Fernley schools. Members also gathered treasures from their garages and attics to raise money for COMPASS.
